Obituary

Sister Arletha Manley was born to the late L.L. McAllister and Mrs. Theola McAllister Tyus on April 25, 1938. She was the 7th child bornto this union. She departed this world on Monday, February 15, 2010 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN. She professed a hope in Chirst at an early age and joined the Spring Valley Baptist Church, Morrilton, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Z.W. Washington. She later joined the Greater Pleasant Branch Baptist Church where Rev. J.R. Raynor is the pastor and remained a member until her death. She was a graduate of Conway County Training School, Menifee, Arkansas, and received a baccalaureate degree from Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal College (now University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) and graduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was married to the late Joseph Norman Manley and three children were born to this union. Upon retiring from public education in 2000, she began to enjoy her hobbies which included: Reading (last chapter first), traveling (domestic and abroad), two cross word puzzles each day, spending time with her grandchildren and cross stitching. She was an active member of the Beta Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated where she was a part of many educational activites. She received many awards and accolades for her years of service in the educational field, church sorority and local community. Her parents, one sister, Juanita, and twin brothers, Theodas and Theopras McAllister preceded her in death. She is survived by her three children: Merike Ann Manley of Kansas City, Missouri; Ritche Anita Manley (Dr.Phillip) Bowden of Memphis, Tennessee, and Sydnee Carol Manley of Little Rock, Arkansas. Three grandchildren: Michelle Jones Manley, Deen Malik Bowden and Dia Tseday Bowden; one sister, Lexene Holley Brockman of Morrilton, Arkansas; three brothers: James Franklin of Morrilton, Arkansas, Amazair II and William Kenney McAllister both of Kansas City, Missouri, nieces, nephews, a host of relatives, associates and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Manley will be Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 2:30 P.M. at Greater Pleasant Branch Baptist Church in Conway, Arkansas 601 Spruce Street by Rev. David Cox. Burial will be at Robinson Cemetery in Conway, Arkansas by Wilson & Jarrett Funeral Home of Morrilton. Family visitation will be Friday evening at 6:00 P.M. at Greater Pleasant Branch Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff Alumni Association (Scholarships) in the name of Mrs. Arletha McAllister Manley.
