Obituary

Mr. Calvin Canady, 94 of Springfield, Arkansas transitioned on December 30, 2022 at Conway Regional. Calvin Coolidge Canady was born September 14, 1928, to the late St. Wis and Everline McFarland Canady in the Mt. Abel Community of Center Ridge, Arkansas. Later the family moved to the Bethlehem Community of Springfield, Arkansas. He joined the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church at an early age under the pastoral leadership of Rev. J.C. Cheers. He served as the church's secretary for more than 50 years, assistant secretary since 2012 and Deacon since 1967. As a member of the Cypress Creek District Association he served as secretary for 40 years from September 1956 to September 1996 and treasurer from 1998-2009. He was assistant Chaplin for the district Laymens for many years. He loved singing old hymns. Calvin attended Northview School in Solgohachia, Arkansas from 1st -10th grade and finished high school at Conway County Training School/Eastside High School in Menifee, Arkansas. He went on to further his education at AM & N/UAPB Pine Bluff, Arkansas for 2 years (1945-1947). He served as President of the CCTS/ESHS Alumni Association from 1992-1998 and later he served as treasurer. Calvin served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean war (1year in Germany) and received an Honorable Discharge. He worked at Winrock Farms for 16 1/2 years. During that time he attended Petit Jean Vo-tech School/UACCM Morrilton, Arkansas and received certifications in electrical/heat and air and refrigeration. He retired from Arkansas Kraft as an electrician after 22 1/2 years. Calvin was a former member of Silver Trowel #9 Masonic Lodge of Morrilton, Arkansas. He also loved farming and gardening. He was a member of the Morrilton Cattlemen's Association for many years. His hobbies included squirrel hunting with his children, playing and coaching baseball. He played with the Union Chapel Travelers for many years and later became their coach. He also coached a Little League team in Morrilton. His nickname was "Lightning" when he ran track, played and refereed basketball. On June 5, 1965 Calvin married Jewel Black. To this union 2 children were born. Monica L. Canady and Marcus D. Canady. He was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Wis and Everline Canady and 14 siblings; Lela Canady Ellis, Pelgrum Canady, Bethena Canady Byers, Minnie Canady Gilreath King, Ozely Canady Tyus, Porter Fleming, Hosea Canady, Serleatha Fleming Mayfield, Alberta Fleming Alexander, Hester Canady Keeling Woods, Goldie Fleming Peters, Serene Canady Cheatham, Ora Lee Canady Toney and Jewell Canady Whatley. Those left to cherish his memory, his wife of 57 years Jewel Canady, daughter Monica (Eric) Canady Hunter, son Marcus (Vicki) Canady, granddaughter ShaNea JaNae' Hunter, and 3 grandsons Erik (Hannah) DeVon Hunter, Michael Elijah Canady and Jeremiah Isaiah Canady.
