Macie Sullivan passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 16, 2023. She had celebrated her 90th birthday on February 5th. She led an extraordinary life ~ one dedicated to both her family and the ideals of public service ~ and served as an inspiration and role model to countless young people. She epitomized all the finest character traits of the greatest generation: hard work, integrity, self-sacrifice personal responsibility, modesty, loyalty, and a strong devotion to God.
She was born in the small community of Springfield, Arkansas during the Great Depression. Macie Sullivan was the daughter of Walter Wesley a farmer and railroad worker and Carrie Criswell Wesley, a homemaker. She graduated from Arkansas AM&N now known as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1955 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation she did her student teaching in West Helena, Arkansas and then served as a substitute teacher at L.W. Sullivan High School for several years prior to acquiring a full-time position at Sarah Clark Elementary. After integration of the Conway County School system in 1967, Macie secured a position at Reynolds Elementary School. Her teaching career spanned nearly 30 years before she retired in 1985 but not before establishing herself as one of the premier educators in Morrilton.
Macie was united in Holy Matrimony to Deacon Richard Garfield Sullivan in 1957, who preceded her in death. He was her devoted husband and best friend for 32 years. One brother, Homer Wesley, preceded her in death. Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Orean Lencola Sullivan-Verseveldt (Roel), The Hague, The Netherlands, Mary Gisele Sullivan, Atlanta, Georgia, Lillie Shree Sullivan (John Nuckles), Atlanta, Georgia; James Garfield Sullivan, Morrilton, Arkansas, and William Pinkney Sullivan, San Diego, California. Seven grandchildren Richard Wesley Williams (Ijeoma) Atlanta, Georgia; Ashley Tolise Williams, Austin, Texas; Xavier Sullivan-Rhone, San Diego, California; Agnes Verseveldt and Diana Verseveldt from The Netherlands and five great grandchildren: Finn Elfrink, Floor Elfrink, Quinten Baptist and Gwen Baptist from The Netherlands and Adaora Williams of Atlanta, Georgia. Nine siblings: Walter Wesley (Lucille); Eugene Wesley; Almeta Meredith (Bruce); Alfretta Wesley; John Wesley (Theressa); Anne Wade; Effie Collins; Russell Wesley (Brenda) and Beatrice Gray (Willie) along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
As we bid farewell to our precious mother, we are left with memories of a life well-lived. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and generosity that will continue to inspire those who knew her. Her spirit will live on through her family, friends, and those whose lives she touched. Though she may be gone, she will not be forgotten and her impact on this world will be felt for years to come. May she rest in peace knowing that her presence will be deeply missed but her memory will be cherished forever.
